Sitting by the Fire Doing Algebra
How horrid is science!
A chemical reaction,
A heated alliance
Of carbon and oxygen;
And the beauty and warmth
Are nothing in its eye.
When a fire is born,
Science should die.
In Genesis
"Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it!"
We cry, in our minds,
As the snake tempts Eve
In the Garden of Eden.
But Eve takes the fruit
From the Devil.
"No!"
We knew the outcome;
We'd read it before.
But we somehow thought,
By our fervent wishes,
The text would change,
And our sinful nature would disappear.

The ducks quack, confused:
Their trough is iced over.
I'm just sad to lose
The crystal wildflowers.
The last ripe raspberry of the cane
Is frozen stiff as a board.
I practically have to eat it off the vine
As I crunch through the frost, singing to the LORD.
On the Edge
Dare I ask the question?
But the castigation would be too great.
I cannot, for the sake of my hide,
My pride or wonder sate.
