Here's a game for those of you who need to practice editing for clarity. Here's a real passage from a Texas driver's ed course: *
A wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels to match them perpendicular to the ground and parellel to each other. These adjustments are important to conduct periodically to maximize the life of the vehicles tires and to enable a smoother, straight and level ride.
Fix it. Make it clearer and more concise.
The steps:
- Figure out what the author is trying to say
- Correct any obvious errors in grammar, punctuation, or spelling
- If there is any jargon or obscure language, simplify.
- Same goes for complicated sentences.
- Here's a general tip that might not always work: break it up into as many short, complete sentences as you can. Then you see which ones you could connect together again.
