'Tis the season for the longest lines anyone has ever seen in the craft stores and home goods shops. It seems like everyone wants to buy a shopping cart full of new decorations and perhaps a few stocking-stuffers. Well, while waiting in the hour-long line that stretched into the aisles of our local Hobby Lobby, I realized that I had a notebook and pen in my purse. There were so many conversations swirling around the store, such a variety of characters living their lives, that the temptation was impossible to resist. Time for a little people-watching.
Writing Prompt: who do you see at the store? What are they saying, what are they doing, what makes them stand out, and do they want to stand out?
Two middle-age ladies, leaning over the one's shopping cart, towards each other, one eagerly discussing the Bob Ross and the merits of oils over acrylics.
A dark-haired girl in a plain mask, scanning the store much as I am.
A pregnant young woman in glasses and a stylish gray sweatshirt, walking past in a business-like fashion, aware that I see her.
One old lady says to another, "We came together; I'm sure we can stand together." They discuss a baby shower, karma, a visit from a granddaughter, table runners.
A little redhead in a Frozen t-shirt and a faded pink fleece sweatshirt. She has brown eyes. She glances around.
It's impossible to soak in everything you see, or even most of it. Let your attention flit from one interesting persona to another, recording fragments of conversations, outfits, shopping cart contents. Collecting people - what a delightful thought!
Other good places to people-watch:
- The waiting room of the doctor's office
- Parks
- Coffee shops (and other restaurants)
- Grocery store parking lots
