Tawdry
(TAHW-dree)
Definition: Fancy in a distasteful way.
Origin: This one's fun. There was this lady named Audrey, and she liked wearing lots of big fancy necklaces and she was rather vain. Then she got some sort of throat disease, converted to Christian, and died and became a saint. So people referred to fancy cheap necklaces as "St. Audrey's lace," which was corrupted to "tawdry lace." Eventually people called anything that was fancy but distasteful "tawdry."
